Poor Kings… for me, it’s tough to say whether it should have been 2002 or 2003, it is hard for anyone (non-Laker fan that is) who have watched game 6 of 2002 western conference finals not to have screamed their heads off for one of the most bias officiated games of all time. If we won game 6, the Kings would have just as easily swept the east and got the championship. It would have made a world of a difference for the future of the franchise and Rick Adelman would also get the recognition he deserves as one of the greatest coaches…

Dude, c’mon.
You know how easily someone could dominate the league in the 30s? It shouldnt have even been called ‘professional’.
Not to mention your a little contradicting when you say Hutson invented route running, but hey Rice was the best at it..
Thats like saying James Naismith is the best basketballer cos he invented it.
Dude, it was the 30s. Rice was one of the most succesful players when the sport was HIGHLY professional and demanding.
The 40s and 40s dont compare.
alf on Wed, 25th Mar 2009 4:55 am
Absolutely horrible article right down to all the little details. How can anyone take you seriously when you write incorrect facts, make idiotic statements and attempt to twist things so horribly just to meet your case.
First of all Rice didnt return for the season finale in 97, he returned for something like a week 14 monday nighter, the last game denver lost that year.
Jerry Rice’s “mountain” and Walter Payton’s “hill” were two very different things. The fact that you compared them shows you are just talking out your ass.
Your post season argument is nothing short of idiocy when you literally have no clue how one guy played.
Your “surrounding talent” argument is utterly stupid, you have no grasp of what talent is or are just making crap up/discounting stuff just to help your case.
The sad thing is although I think the title clearly belongs to Rice, I do respect that a case can be made for Hutson. But in this attempt your lack of logic and research has failed you miserably.
Lionel on Wed, 25th Mar 2009 5:08 am
Great article! Although I do think that obviously Jerry Rice is more athletic and talented, Hutson was more dominant in his era. I just think that it depends what your definition of the best receiver of all time is.
Eddie D on Wed, 25th Mar 2009 4:01 pm
You’ve got to be kidding right? This guy played in a league with 10 teams, its very easy to get gaudy numbers when your comp is only 10 other teams VS Rice’s 32.
Your truth is a joke, back then guys were getting off from their 6-10hr jobs and going to play football!!! Realistically I don’t give any team from his era a chance VS the worse in ours. You wasted your time…….
jeffy on Wed, 25th Mar 2009 5:05 pm
Your claim that Rice was arguably the 4th best reciever in 95 is comical. Omg i just reread that section and it is so so so stupid…
RICE PLAYED HALF OF THAT SEASON WITH ELVIS GRBAC!
I also loled at poor Cris Carter having to put up with a HoFer at QB, what an amazing season he had overcoming his QBs short comings.
I think you can throw in the towel on you writing career.
sjniner on Wed, 25th Mar 2009 8:43 pm
THIS is the kind of garbage that “Fantasy Geeks” who have never played the game at a high level come up with..He makes all these “adjustments” to Rice’s numbers without taking into consideration all factors that makes the game of football much more difficult to excel..
–Much better opponent talent: Only 10 teams without any minorities. How many DB’s did Hudson face that ran the 40 in 4.5 seconds? I’ll bet none..Rice faced those every game..
–Much better defensive coaching: Do you think Hudson ever saw much double teaming, zone blitzs or anything that coaches come up with NOWDAYS..
–Coast to coast travel while playing some games on Thurs, Fri, Sat OR Sundays?
–The game is much more physical. The players are much larger, faster and talented than Hudson’s day. It’s that way in every sport.
–He calls Hudson “a winner” for his “4 champ games winning 2″..Well idiot, you should know that Rice played in 4 Super Bowls winning 3, which is a better winning percentage by my math!!
–Can you (or anyone else without using Google) name ANY other WR from Hudson’s era? EXACTLY!!!
Shouldn’t you be on your mom’s computer in the basement “working” on your fantasy team before your shift starts at In and Out? JABRONI GO AWAY!!

Moses on Fri, 27th Mar 2009 10:44 am
You silly little boy, most of Don Hutson’s great years came when pro football had been decimated by the WWII draft and volunteerism. Seriously, it got so bad that the NFL eventually had to contract.
Even more important, the talent level was so LOW in those NFL days that guys who wouldn’t be able to get a try-out with a modern team were starters. Hell, some of them became probowlers or even HOFers. So a marginal athlete, like Hutson, could succeed wildley. Despite his lower level of talent and ability than someone like Rice.

kavaholic on Fri, 27th Mar 2009 9:21 pm
The fact that you totally disregarded Dotson playing in a less competitive league shows that you dont know much about football. Why dont you use common sense and realize that the game evolved from when Dotson played to when Rice played. Rice dominated in an era where the NFL is mainstream. Rice dominated the NFL in an era where the NFL picks up the cream of the crop athletes from all over the U.S. Dotson played in an almost amateur league. Use common sense before writing your articles!!

I’m sorry but this article is horrible in my opinion. First of all, Jake Peavy is trash. The Padres realize that and tried to dump him for next to nothing this year and had no suitors. Any team in baseball would love to have a “true elite ace” on their squad so how did they not get a single offer? He benefits from an extremely pitcher friendly park and that’s it. My second issue is with the Diamondbacks taking first on your list. They have the worst pitching staff in the NL West if not the whole NL. I do like Webb, but Haren is decent at best and that’s why the A’s dumped him. The Blue Jays and Giants should definitely take 1 and 2 (not necessarily in that order). My last problem is that Matt Cain didn’t even get mentioned. That kid is the truth. He does have a little issue with walks but his era is always under 4 and throws at least 160 k’s a year. If he played for a team that could give him any kind of run support, he’d be a Cy Young candidate yearly.

I could take the time to defend my point, but I think it’s much more effective and efficient just to say this about this particular article: lol.
Ben Brown on Sun, 29th Mar 2009 5:22 am
Matt Cain isn’t the Giants Number one or two starter.
How is Jake Peavy trash? Do we have the same guy?
If Haren is decent, what do you want, Walter Johnson?
It isn’t about the 1,2,3,4,5 of the rotation, it is about the 1 and 2.
AS the suthor of the article I don’t understand why you would comment on here without any facts to back it up.
Peavy wasn’t traded because no one wanted to pay the hefty price in terms of prospects.
Haren wasn’t “dumped”, the A’s wanted prospects.

I think that the 1998 Jazz should be numero uno. They were the only ones to be favored over MJ and the bulls thats got to be worth something. And they only beat them because of Bryan Russel, if he wasnt so freakin clumsy the Jazz would have won! The Kings went out in the second round and the Jazz made it to the NBA finals!!!!!!!!!! Which is beter a second round loss to the Mavs or a finals loss to MJ and the Bulls?!!Huh, which is beter? and the Jazz had Stockton and Malone. I debate only one thing you said: “Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler only won because Jordan retired the first time.” Yeah, I’m a Rockets guy, but Houston had an outstanding team that year with a dominating superstar of their own.
Regardless, I do not question that Jordan was the best ever. Perhaps you can help me find a stat. I found your site while searching for Michael Jordan’s career won/loss record. True, Michael had great stats throughout his career, but to me, ony two stats really count: career wins/losses and championships.
