The Cleveland Cavaliers completed a four game sweep Sunday of the Detroit Pistons. Led by arguably this years league MVP, Lebron James, the Cavs showed no signs of sluggishness against a Detroit team who had appeared in six straight Eastern Conference Finals.
Playing without point guard Chauncey Billups for the first time since their six year ECF streak began, the Pistons looked like a mere shadow of their old selves. Making matters worse, or, as some would argue better, they were also without Allen Iverson, the man they acquired for Billups at the beginning of the season.
With a new head coach and two young guards running their offense, the Cavaliers had a field day in this series. On Sunday, with a three games to none lead, James marched into the Palace of Auburn Hills -the Pistons home court- put his teammates on his back, and swept the series in convincing fashion.
King James dethroned Tayshaun Prince, aka “The Palace Prince”, and used Detroit’s home turf as his own personal playground. Finishing Sunday’s game with 36 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists, Lebron entered an elite group of NBA greats. With his outstanding performance Sunday, he became just the third NBA player in history to average at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists in a single postseason series, joining the likes of Larry Bird and Oscar Robertson.
Cleveland now can relax as they wait to see who their next opponent will be. They’re scheduled to take on the winner of the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat series.
Leading the series two games to one, the Heat have enjoyed back to back wins after a slow start in game one, in which they managed to score a meager 64 points. In winning games two and three, the Heat have enjoyed Lebron-esque performances from Dwyane Wade.
Any true NBA fan would be giddy with excitement, should the Heat win their first round series, and advance to face the Cavaliers. A matchup that would pit two of the best players that the league has to offer against one another, would result in an entertaining series, unlike the Pistons bowing out without a fight.
